The widely-admired poet, Matt Simpson, was born in Bootle in 1936. After studying English at Cambridge University, he returned to his native city with his German-born wife, and apart from one brief break in 1995, when he was Writer-in-Residence to Arts Tasmania he remained in Liverpool for the rest of his life, eventually retiring from his post as senior lecturer at Liverpool Hope University College to concentrate on his writing. He died in June, 2009.
W. S. Graham spoke for all Simpson’s readers when he said that the work showed “A special individual voice speaking from an individual place, a good hardness coming out of family values and physical working objects … a real special poet.”
