Biko Lives! Contesting the Legacies of Steve Biko

by Edited by Andile Mngxitama, Amanda Alexander and Nigel C. Gibson - £39.99  Palgrave Macmillan (2008)
paperback    ISBN 13: 9780230606494 | ISBN 10: 0230606490

Biko Lives! is an intervention in post-apartheid South African politics as well as the culture and history of the anti-apartheid movements, addressing not only the current commodification of Steve Biko but also the various appropriations of his legacy.

It brings together the work of prominent international activists and intellectuals and includes philosophical reflections on Biko's thought, historical investigations of Black Consciousness in South Africa as well as Biko's global legacy, and analysis of the significance of his ideas to the present.

By reintroducing Biko to a new generation in the context of a new period in South African politics, this much-needed volume points the way forward toward a deeper and more serious discussion of his ideas and legacies.

"Taken as a whole, this collection os essays is an important addition to the scholarship on Steve Biko. It contributes not only to a deeper understanding of what philosophy is, but also how Biko's writing can be considered philosophical."
(Martin Murray, Professor of Sociology, SUNY Binghamton)
"I never thought I would read anything like this that reminded me of the 'good old days' when we were giddy with hopes and enthusiasm for recreating our own world! Biko Lives! will ruffle many feathers. People who have been trying to 'program' the forward movement of history and human development are going to have to think again."
(Bokwe Mafuna, former journalist, founding organiser of the Black Workers Project, and friend of Steve Biko's.)
